When a group of art lovers met in Jávea early in 2017 for the inaugural meeting of the Marina Alta Fine Arts Society they had no idea whether anybody else would wish to join them. Their fears, however, were unfounded as within six weeks 175 members had signed up. When the meeting ‘Treasures of the Silk Road’ took place five months later, demand was such that the venue was full to capacity and a waiting list of some 50 people needed to be created.
The search then began for larger premises and in February 2018 Salones Canor in Teulada, the site of the fledgling society’s highly successful Arts Fair three months previously, hosted the first meeting after the move. Members immediately praised the easy parking, bright and sharp projection, good sightlines, clear sound – and they even spoke highly of the complimentary wine served at the end of the presentation.
So who are we? Although we are run by a local committee, we have the backing of the universally respected Arts Society which has 387 local societies around the world and over 90,000 members.
What are our objectives? To provide and stimulate awareness and enjoyment of the arts and, further, to enhance knowledge of a broad canvas of related culture and heritage.
Who are our speakers? They are drawn from the Arts Society’s Directory of 400 top-flight speakers, all experts in their own right and covering a wide range of artistic and cultural topics.
Examples? Recent titles have included: ‘Highlights of Madrid’, ‘Art Treasures of Florence’, ‘Fakes and Forgeries – The Art of Deception’, ‘Art Deco – an Introduction’ and many more.
